Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing…..

“Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing” is a phrase I heard from a very dear friend of mine who was quite the successful entrepreneur in the health food industry. I liked hearing the phrase at first but did not give it much attention at the time. Later on, I determined that it had to do with not losing track of what is important. It could mean one thing or it could mean several things. The point is, it is of utmost importance that one does not lose track of what the important things are.

Health for example; as the saying goes “If you have your health you have everything.” There is a lot of truth to this. Without our health, other things would not be possible so I think it is safe to say that this should be a big priority. From there, everything else branches off. Other priorities could range from personal relationships, financial well-being, having a roof over our heads, etc. Each of us as individuals has the choice of deciding what is right for us. What we need to is make sure that we don’t get caught up in so much other stuff that our true priorities suffer. Balance is needed to ensure that everything stays in synch. If someone lets themselves get up in focusing on one thing such as financial matters and pays no attention to the personal relationships in their life, the relationships could suffer. Any emotional repercussions that ensue could lead to a downgrade in the financial aspect or any other aspect of their lives due to the neglect that resulted.

So at some point, sit down with a pen and paper and take some time to jot down a list of the things that are important to you (be sure to include health!). Determine the order of importance as they relate to all the other items on your list. Then take a look at the things that are taking up your time on a daily basis and see if they are on your list of important items. If not, make the necessary changes. If they are, pat yourself on the shoulder; you are on the right track! Re-verify to ensure that you are “keeping the main thing the main thing” and allow yourself to feel good once you know that you are. You may already be doing this without being aware of it!
